About Mary Chege

Ms Chege is a professional with over fourteen years’ experience in legal and project finance advisory services. As Director, Africa, for Development Finance International, Inc., Ms Chege is responsible for DFI’s Africa practice, providing support to both private and public sector clients in renewable energy, agribusiness, infrastructure, healthcare, ICT and financial inclusion sectors in Sub-Saharan Africa.  Her role includes both business development across the Continent as well as leading and providing support to various teams in project execution for the firm’s broad range of clients.

 

Prior to joining DFI Inc., Ms Chege served as Technical Advisor in one of the newly formed County Governments in Kenya and was responsible for coordinating the structuring and execution of IFI funded projects in the Finance, Infrastructure, Healthcare and ICT Sectors within the County. She was responsible for coordinating the development of the Integrated Development Plan, County ICT Road Map, and managing the process of structuring and establishment of the County Youth, Women & Persons with Disability Fund.  She also represented the County Government in the Council of Governors’ Infrastructure & Energy and Public Finance Committees.

 

Ms Chege has also served as Senior Lawyer responsible for legal services for Rennaisance Capital’s Africa Land Programme with a special focus on TATU City (K) Limited. She was responsible for the drafting of project agreements for various projects in Kenya, Ghana and Democratic Republic of Congo.

 

While in Johannesburg, Ms Chege served as legal advisor in a transaction team advising the City of Johannesburg in its R1 billion broadband network project. She was also advisor to the corporate finance bidder in its successful bid for the establishment of a R1 billion property fund on behalf of the Johannesburg Property Company. 

 

Ms Chege started her career in the Johannesburg office of LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae, an international law firm with over 25 offices across the globe. As part of the firm’s international corporate and energy practices, she acted on behalf of various local and international clients in commercial, corporate and energy transactions and projects.  Mary also served as the human resource co-ordinator for the Johannesburg office from June 2005 till her departure in January 2007.

 

Ms Chege was in 2012 recognized by the South African Business Network and the World Business Almanac for her outstanding leadership and achievement in her occupation.  While in college, she was the recipient of the University of Witwatersrand Merit Based Scholarship, 2000 and Best Student, International Human Rights Law, University of Nairobi. 

Born in Kenya, Ms Chege holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Nairobi, Kenya and a Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of the Witwatersrand. She currently lives in Nairobi, Kenya with her two daughters and serves as the Assistant Treasurer of the Rusinga Group of Schools PTA Executive Committee. In her spare time, she enjoys writing, running and travelling.
